Vets Open Season With Charlesworth Victory

Season 4 - Game 1 - Not even a Sight screen can stop the Vets

It was a beautiful Thursday evening at North Road and word must have got out as the fans flocked in to watch the return of Glossop's most exciting cricket team. Glossop showed their superb teamwork before a ball was bowled when it only took 25 minutes and 9 Vets to fix the tangled sight screen. Glossop then also won the toss and choose to bowl, things were looking good.

2 big winter signings, Jamie Kay and Leigh McGlynn were making their debuts and both made a great start to their Vets careers.

Jay Allen and Steve Kirkham opened the bowling and put the vets in a solid position, Kirkham taking a wicket with his first ball of the season; a full, straight delivery that took out middle stump. All his work in the winter nets was paying off, with the ball at least.

Ted Mitchell and Jack Thornborrow were next up. Thornborrow bowling his mysterious fast spin and Mitchell bowling great lines. And it was Mitchell who strook next when the batsmen got a top edge, sending the ball high into the bright sky, and Andy Wilde behind the stumps back pedalling taking a superb catch.

The 2 new boys were next, McGlynn and Kay, both keeping it tight in the middle overs.

Paul Edgar and Sam Alder were next up. Alder causing issues at 1 end, but it was Edgar who was next to strike, not once, but twice. The first taking middle stump out, the second caught by Taylor at mid-off. Edgar was on hattrick ball, the Vets crowded the bat, the batsman was sweating but managed to see off the delivery, but Charlesworth were struggling on 66 for 4 after 16 overs.

Lewis Calvert and Colin Taylor finished off the innings, Calvert tight from the Spire Hollin End, picking up a wicket and Taylor causing issues from the Train line end, taking 2 further wickets. Glossop Vets were excellent in the field and had restricted Charlesworth to 78 for 7.

Glossop went out to bat feeling confident of chasing down 79 but got into a bit of trouble early with Mitchell (1) and Alder (2) getting out to some good full-length bowling, both reaching for the ball and getting stumped. Thornborrow and Calvert were at the crease and calmed things down. Both kept the scoreboard ticking with good running and excellent shot play, Thornborrow finishing with 20 and Calvert 25, both going at a run a ball.

Edgar and Kirkham came to the crease, Kirkham struggled to get going but Edgar kept things moving with a quick 9 runs. Next up was McGlynn and Wilde. Wilde swung hard, as did McGlynn but McGlynn was unfortunate and got caught out but Glossop had done the damage and were within 3 of winning. Jay Allen came out batting next after his stint as assistant umpire, aiding his own chances of getting to the crease by giving 2 of the vets out stumped, but Allen showed his worth, with Wilde, and steered Glossop Vets over the line with 5 overs to spare. Glossop will face tougher games this season, but this was a solid start from a solid team.

Man of the Match - Lewis Calvert

Bowled solid at the end of the innings claiming 1 wicket for 5 runs and steadied the ship early on in Glossop’s innings and retired not out on 25. Great performance.

May Bank Holiday Weekend At Glossop Cricket Club

The cricket season is well and truly underway and its been great to see so many of you at the club last weekend showing your support.

This weekend is the first bank holiday weekend of May and it's a cricket packed week ahead.

Wednesday

The club will be open from 5pm. The Under 13's start their 2026 GMCL campaign at home to Droyslden, 6pm start. The newly formed Under 18's team travel to Droylsden, also a 6pm start.

Thursday

Doors open 5pm. Col Taylor's Vets team take centre stage at North Road for their game against Charlesworth Vets, 5:30pm start. Bring your suntan lotion as it's going to be warm.

Friday

Doors open at 5pm, junior cricket training for Under 9's, 11's, and 13's starting at 6pm. It's going to be warm so don't forget hats, drinks, and suntan lotion.

Saturday

The in-form 2nd XI are at home to Droylsden (12:30 start), and the 1st XI make the reverse trip to Droyslden.

At 5:30pm, Arsenal v Fulham will be shown live on the big screens.

Sunday

The cricket never stops with the Under 11's at home to Tintwistle in the morning. The 1st XI are back in action for the second time this weekend with an away trip to South West Manchester in the 1st XI Championship Cup.

More live sport on the big screens at 3:30pm with Manchester United v Liverpool. Chip butties at half time - what's not to like!

Monday

Junior cricket on Monday sees the Under 15's away at Mottram (6pm), with the Under 11's at home to Mottram (6pm). The club will be open from 12 noon.

1st XI

Glossop 185/4 (34.3) - Glodwick 184/7 (50)

A very different weekend to last week with the weather! Glossop lost the toss and had a bowl. After an uncharacteristically loose start with Glodwick racing to 44-1 off 7 overs Glossop bowled with much more control to restrict Glodwick to 184 on a very good cricket wicket with lots of credit going to will and Matt .

In the chase Glossop lost 3 early wickets rapidly to put some pressure on but Lee and Matt batted with great composure to have a strong partnership to score the bulk of the runs. Dan senior came into finish the job in style with some classy shots and Glossop winning by 6 wickets earning a bonus point win.

2nd XI

Woodley 122/10 (31.2) - Glossop 124/4 (27.1)

Another excellent performance from the team on a soft & slow wicket. Glossop won the toss and chose to bowl. Despite an aggressive start from Woodley, Glossop’s bowlers were calm and disciplined ensuring wickets fell regularly. They were backed up by some excellent fielding, notably from Jack Stopford.

Despite an early wobble chasing a modest total, another perfectly measured innings from Ollie Boothroyd was the difference. Good partnerships with Joe Bolton and then Dave Allen meant Glossop quickly silenced a vocal home side to win by 6 wickets and get the bonus point.

Glossop 94/10 (21.2) - Dinting 97/4 (19)

Glossop CC made a difficult start, slipping to 16–4 as Dinting’s bowlers dominated early. A vital 43‑run stand between Joseph Bolton (39) and Steve Marsh (11) steadied the innings, with Olly Boothroyd adding a brisk 11. But once the partnership ended, wickets fell regularly and Glossop were dismissed for 94, leaving their attack with a small but defendable total.

In reply, Glossop fought hard. Nathan Allen struck twice to lift hopes, while Jonathon Kirk bowled an excellent spell of 1–15 from five overs. The pressure continued when Freddie claimed his first senior wicket, reducing Dinting to 66–4 and giving Glossop a genuine opening. However, Dinting regrouped and completed the chase without further loss, finishing on 97–4.

Under 11's

Hayfield 198 - Glossop 153

The Young Lions put in a gutsy shift despite the loss to a strong Hayfield side. We posted 153 with sharp boundaries from Jake and Elliott and great running from Arabelle and Max. Tight bowling spells followed, with wickets for Elliott and William, plus a brilliant, economical finish from Jake. In the field we stayed focused, and William — who stopped everything despite a sore hand — earned Player of the Match.

2nd XI Shine In Season Opener

The senior cricket season got underway last weekend with the 2nd XI being the standout performance.

1st XI - Swinton Moorside v Glossop

Swinton Moorside 257 for 9. Glossop 162 all out.

The 1s kicked off their campaign with a disappointing loss in some cold and wet conditions. Fluent cricket proved difficult, especially for the seamers who struggled with run-ups on the slick surface. Umpires discussed a potential game abandonment 15 overs in, and in hindsight that may not have been the worst outcome for GCC.

Swinton Moorside’s professional Kurera handled the conditions superbly with 124 from 94 balls, anchoring their innings as they reached 257, a total well above par in the circumstances.

Glossop’s reply started well at 110–1 off 16 overs, but a key LBW decision against Anuk Fernando shifted momentum. Conditions continued to play their part, with Lee Dale falling in unusual fashion as the ball held up in the pitch. Glossop were eventually bowled out for 162, with James Eyre adding useful lower-order resistance.

Despite the result, there were positives to take and lessons to build on as Glossop look ahead to next week.

2nd XI - Glossop v Austerlands

A statement performance from the first game of the season saw Glossop take a commanding win on a chilly and damp April day at North Road. Winning the toss and bowling first, Glossop produced an impressive bowling display with Austerlands all out for 72 backed up by some good pressure in the field. Bowling highlights...

In reply Glossop produced a measured and disciplined batting performance to knock the runs off with 9 wickets intact. Batting highlights...

An excellent all round start to the season with good energy and positivity from the whole team

3rd XI - Blakeley v Glossop

A really tough start for the 3rd XI vs a very strong and organised Blakeley 2nd XI on a soft wicket at a small ground. After losing the toss and bowling first, although Glossop got off to a good start with 2 early wickets, the opposition settled and took full advantage of the short boundaries, and posted a very healthy 273.

It was always going to be a mammoth ask, and in reply Glossop got off to a poor start losing an early wicket in the 2nd over, but this brought a young Joe Bolton to the crease who produced a herculean effort to try to reduce the deficit. He watched carefully for the good balls, and punished the bad ones on his way to 94 not out, he simply ran out of batting partners.

Despite the result, there was lots of positivity around the field and plenty to build on for the season.

Super 6's Returns for 2026!

After last years incredible success, the Glossop CC Super Sixes tournament is back! We are opening up registration for players to join now.

Requirements to register:

Glossop CC paying member or sponsor
⁠Age group 14 to 'Old'
⁠Cannot be regular 1st teamers

As per last year, all abilities welcome! We are hoping to get the majority of names in by the end of February so we can plan with a little more time this year. Please get in touch with Adam Wilson directly if you'd like to play.

Once we have all the players names, we can start to put some evenly matched teams together.

Glossop Cricket Club's annual golf day returns this year, taking place on Friday, 31st July 2026, at the beautiful Glossop Golf Club.

Whether you're a seasoned pro or just enjoy a leisurely round, this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a day of golf, good company, and support your local cricket club. Gather your team of four and get ready for a day of friendly competition on the greens.

Glossop Cricket Club's hugely popular Winter Walks return for 2025 with the first walk on Saturday 1st November 2025 at 11am.

The walk is open to EVERYONE. Juniors, seniors, partners, family, friends, dogs etc. The more the merrier, all are welcome. It’s a good chance to get out in the open, catch up, keep fit etc.

The walk will begin at 11am, starting from Glossop CC. Breakfast barms, teas and coffees from 10am. Upon return the bar will be open and we will put some hot food on.

Final Cancelled, But A Legacy Secured – Glossop U15s 2025

It’s with real disappointment that we share news of the cancellation of the GMCL U15 Champion of Champions Final between Glossop CC and Elton CC, scheduled for Saturday 21st September at Glossop CC and as such will share the Champions trophy.

Due to ongoing poor weather and a bleak forecast, the final has sadly been called off – denying both sets of players the chance to compete for the ultimate title in what would’ve been a fitting end to two outstanding seasons.

While the players, coaches and families will understandably feel frustrated, nothing can take away from what this group has achieved.
✅ Unbeaten in league cricket for the past the 3 seasons
✅ Back-to-back GMCL East Performance Division titles
✅ Back-to-back u15s GMCL Champions

These players have set the standard, not just with their performances, but with their spirit, attitude and togetherness. As they now make the step up to the U18s in 2026, they leave the U15s age group with a legacy of consistency and success to be proud of.

Match Report: Hayfield Nomads v Glossop Vets (26th August 2025)

On a beautiful Tuesday evening, Glossop Vets made the short journey over Chunal to play the Nomads - their last game of the season. Expectation was high and spirits were up, the Vets really wanted to put on a show ….and the fans that travelled were not disappointed.

Glossop welcomed Liam Amos and Dan Keeley for their debuts, the Nomads were put into bat and Glossop set about trying to keep them down to a small total on the undulating ground with one of the smallest boundaries seen all season.

Glossop opened with Jay Allen and Sam Alder. Alder looked a little rusty due to a short lay off, but still had a few magic deliveries. Allen looked a bit stiff after his 5 over spell for the 3rds but managed to keep the Nomads down to 21 runs in the first 4.

Ted Mitchell and Dan Keeley were next up. Both turned the screw with superb line and length and both were rewarded. Mitchell first with a fizzing delivery that was knocked high back towards him, he managed to back pedal and hold off the challenge from Ste Kirkham to take a high catch off his own bowling. Keeley next, superb full length delivery taking the stumps out the ground…the pair had bowled 4 overs, took 2 wickets for 7 runs combined. Nomads were under pressure.

Steve Kirkham and Dave Allen bowled the next set. Kirkham steady. Allen bowling with his usual unusual run up causing issues and managed to sneak one through the gate for the Vets 3rd wicket. But this brought Nomads middle order to the crease - and their middle order is dangerous.

Liam Amos and Tim Halpin had to try come up with some plans to take some quick wickets and it was Amos who struck. A full straight delivery nipping the bails off. The danger man was gone…unfortunatly this brought the other danger man to the crease and he didn't hold back, hitting a quick 20. Halpin bowled well, showing last year's form..the vets hoping he can take this into next season.

Due to some expansive hitting the Nomads were on 122 off 16 overs and at risk of posting a big total. Rick Marsden and Taylor bowled the last 4. Both were tight. Taylor took 3 quick wickets for 1 run and Marsden closed down his end only going for 3 runs and bowling a maiden for the 20th over. Fielding was on point and the vets had held the Nomads to 126 .

Halpin and Kirkham opened the batting, Both started well. Kirkham hitting his first 6 of the season to score a quick fire 10 before being caught out. Halpin, this time with the bat, looking back to his best. Marsden joined him at the crease and both set about knocking off the runs. Halpin, then Marsden started to open the shoulders and boundaries were keeping the Vets up with the run rate. Both retired unbeaten, Halpin on 23 off 17 and Marsden with 23 off 20. Allen and Keeley were now at the crease. Allen hit a 6 but was out next ball, caught in the deep for 8. Keeley was looking composed, playing some proper cricket shots with 2 lovely cover drives to the boundary to move onto 14. Taylor joined him at the crease.

Keeley then got a ripper that took his middle stump out, Mitchell came in who had been in imperious form, first ball…straight through the gate and bowled. Glossops danger man was gone for a golden. Nomads bowler was on a hattrick ... .the field came in….but in came Super Sam Alder. First ball…4…second ball …4…third ball…4….fouth ball….4….fifth ball…you guessed it….4…..Alder had put the vets in an unloseable position and had scored the quickest retirement of the season with a 400% strike rate….now thats Cozball!!

Taylor retired on 10 leaving Wilde and Jay Allen to score the winning runs. Wilde went big trying to finish it early but was caught on the boundary, with a 1 handed catch. Amos came to join Allen at the crease, the vets only needing 2 runs off 3 overs to win. Nomads were tight around the bat and Allen couldn't get the ball away. Tensions were rising in the Vets dressing room…surley Allen could hit 1…and he did, a wide delivery..Allen spun on it and hit it hard behind him nearly hitting the wicketkeeper with bat and ball… but it flew to the boundary and the vets had finished the season on a high. 4 wins on the bounce to cap a good 3rd season.

Man of the Match - Sam Alder. Explosive batting won the game, Best strike rate of the season and was great to watch. Cozball in its finest form.

The vets will now take a break but will be having a presentation and a christmas doo and it will be great to all get together and talk crap about how good we were this season and how we need to improve and try come up with a plan to get our achey bones through another season…but i hope everyone enjoyed the year and i look forward to seeing you back in the nets next year.

On a warm and welcoming afternoon at North Road, Glossop CC’s Vets & Sponsors XI took to the field against the always-enjoyable Hayfield Nomads, delivering a wonderful game played in excellent spirit and full of memorable moments both on and off the pitch.

Batting first, the home side posted a competitive 149 for 3 in the retire-at-25 format, with a series of composed and confident contributions.

• Lewis Calvert opened with a fluent 25 retired

• Andrew Portmann of Alpha BPO swung hard and retired with a 13 ball 28

• Steve Marsh and Ted Mitchell both retired on 25, demonstrating solid technique and some brutal hitting

• Andy Wilde added a run-a-ball 22 before selflessly retiring

• A special moment saw father and son Dan and Benjamin Cornwell (SPE Resourcing) bat together in a proud family highlight for the day

In response, Hayfield Nomads were restricted to 114, thanks not only to smart bowling but also an impeccable fielding display from the Glossop side.

Episode XXV – The Battle of North Road

A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, the warriors of Glossop CC Vets & Sponsors assembled at North Road. Their mission: to defend the honour of the Lions against the roaming Hayfield Nomads. The Force was strong, and with light sabres disguised as cricket bats, the heroes of Glossop prepared for battle.

First to ignite his blade was Lewis Calvert, striking 25 before retiring to the pavilion Jedi Council. Andrew Portmann of Alpha BPO stepped forward next, playing strokes as precise as a droid’s calculations, also retiring on 28. The experienced knights Steve Marsh and Ted Mitchell each retired on 25, while Andy Wilde delivered a flurry of 22 runs. A truly special moment in the saga saw the father-and-son duo, Dan and Ben Cornwell (SPE Resourcing), stride out together – the Force clearly runs strong in that family. Glossop closed their innings on 149 for 3, the Death Star firmly constructed.

When the Nomads took up the chase, the Lions unleashed their Jedi bowlers. Steve Kirkham was ruthless, striking twice for just 12 runs. Andy Lang (representing Alpha BPO & Munny), making his cricket debut, bowled with Sith-like menace, taking 2-16. Ben Cornwell (1-2), Steve Marsh (1-13), and Rick Marsden (1-9) all dealt decisive blows. Meanwhile, Ted Mitchell and Dan Cornwell tightened the screws with their accuracy, ensuring the Nomads’ resistance was futile.

The fielding was nothing short of heroic. Lewis Calvert soared through the air at deep mid-wicket, pouching a spectacular diving catch worthy of a Starfighter pilot. Even Andy Lang, despite occasionally wandering the outfield like a lost stormtrooper, found himself in the right place at the right time to claim a sharp catch. Behind the stumps, Andy Wilde and Ben Cornwell provided tidy keeping, shutting down the Nomads’ counter-attack.

At the final reckoning, the Nomads were restricted to 114, and the Rebels of North Road triumphed. The crowd cheered, the sponsors smiled, and balance was restored to the cricketing galaxy.

Glossop's Bright Start Not Enough versus Edenfield

A superb 127 run opening stand from Max Hatzoglou (56) and Chris Gill (3) gave Glossop hoping chasing 324, but Edenfields's pro Adeel Meo (189 & 4-53) proved the difference.

Glossop 251 all out (48.4 overs) - defeat by 72 runs.

2nd XI Win Nail-Biter At Saddleworth

Glossop 2nd XI held their nerve to beat Saddleworth by just 7 runs in a nail biter at Well-i-hole.

With the bat, John Stopford (51) and David Wile (43) set the tone. Skipper David Allen (29) kept the scoreboard moving, with Glossop setting a target of 223-8.

With the ball, Joseph Bolton (4-49) and Chris Coll (3-33) were the heroes, backup by Joe Doody (2-40) who took the match-winning wicket.

Tuesday 12th August sees the Vets at home to Hayfield Gnomads, 6pm start.

Saturday 16th August, the 1st XI travel to Belfields to take on Woodhouses. The 2nd XI are at home to Milnrow. Both matches start at 12:30pm.

On Sunday 17th August the 3rd XI make the journey to Stalybridge Cricket Club in the DCCL Sunday League North fixture.

The Resurgence Continues

Glossop Vets vs Mottram - Tuesday 5th August 2025

As the sun broke through the clouds, Glossop vets were in action again…This time against Mottram who had beaten them earlier in the season, so the Vets were up for it. Glossop had Ted Mitchell making his debut and Archie Edgar making his second appearance of the season.

Glossop won the toss and chose to bowl.

The boundaries had been moved in so Glossop needed a good start to not give Mottram a flyer, so the ball was thrown to the Edgars. Father and son opening up and it was Archie who took the new ball and opened up with a maiden, could dad back him up? He could, and Paul made the breakthrough with a lovely full swinging delivery that flicked the off stump of the opener. 2 more solid overs meant the Edgars combined had gone for 12 runs and took 1 wicket, Archie excelling, bowling 11 dot balls.

Glossop had gone for an in out field with a few men in stopping the single and the rest patrolling the boundaries. Mottram were feeling the pressure after a slow start and started to swing abit. Dave Wilde and Marsden bowled the next 4. Wilde slightly unlucky and going for a few boundaries but Marsden was tight, only going for 2 runs and bowling 10 dot balls and had a dropped catch behind the stumps. Glossop were definitely on top.

Steve Page and Ted Mitchell were next up. Page was still recovering from a heavy weekend at Ynot festival and his line was abit off but only went for 5 of 2 overs. Mitchell was excellent and showed signs he could be a staple of the team moving forward, only going for 3 runs off 2 overs.

Fielding was excellent and Glossop managed to stop the quick singles, creating more and more pressure. Steve Kirkham and Tom Rogers bowled the next the next 4, Mottram started to open up and knocked a few boundaries but the pair managed to restrict them to 19 off the 4 overs.

Taylor and Calvert bowled the last 4. Taylor kept it tight and got Glossop’s second wicket with a caught and bowled low to his left hand side, Calvert supported well at the other end and only went for 13. Glossop had had their best bowling and fielding performance of the season, not getting many wickets but bowling 66 dot balls and restricting Mottram to 103 for 2 .

The chase was on, could they do it 10 overs??

Calvert and Rogers opened the batting. Initially they found it hard going and couldn’t get the ball away. After knocking a few singles and starting to settle, Rogers got a ripper that bounced an extra touch and he flicked it up and was caught out behind for 4. In came Ste Kirkham. Kirkham looked good for first 2 balls, then went on the attack looking for boundaries and knocked 1 up to mid wicket, out for 0. Glossop were 7-2 and the 103 target looked along way away.

In came Marsden, looking to make a point against his childhood team. Calvert and Marsden rebuilt well and both started to look good at the crease. The run rate increased as Calvert, then Marsden both started hitting boundaries, Marsden with the first 6 of the innings. Calvert got to 25 and retired, bringing Page to the crease. Page found it tough going and was out for 1, caught at mid-wicket. Wilde in next. Wilde had been in good form but also found the going tough. Marsden at the other end was approaching 25, flicked 1 off his legs…looked a boundary all day long but some superb fielding by Mottram cut it off, Marsden and Wilde had strolled the first run and they called a second but were under pressure, the throw was good and Marsden was run out for 22…his second run out against Mottram. But a solid innings had put Glossop on track.

Wilde was out soon after, bowled through the gate which brought the Edgars together at the crease. Archie couldn’t back up his superb bowling and was out for 1 but Paul looked soild. Taylor came to the crease. Glossop needing 35 for 5 overs.

Paul started to let loose and smashed back-to-back 6s to move closer to the total, scoring a quick fire 22 before he was bowled out, bringing Mitchell to the crease. Mitchell, suffering with the vets main injury, a hamstring pull in your debut game, didn’t fancy any quick singles so took it upon himself to hit a quick fire 18, including 2 big 6s which took Glossop to victory with 2 overs to spare. Glossop were never really in trouble but they made it harder than it should have been but they got the job done, and now unbeaten in 2 games, showing some form from the Glory years of the last 2 years.

Man of the Match – Richard Marsden . Excellent bowling only going for 2 runs, should have had a wicket. Kept it tight whilst fielding close and held the middle order together scoring 22 runs.

Great result lads. Loads of superb performances, Paul Edgar, Lewis Calvert and Ted Mitchell showing great skills with the bat and ball.

Match Report: Hadfield v Vets (23/7/25)

Like A Phoenix From The Flames

To say this has been a tough season for the Vets would be an understatement…but you cant keep a good team down and the Vets proved this whilst playing their arch enemy on Wednesday night. Debuts were given to Jack Thornborrow and Nathan Allen, Glossop lost the toss and were put into bowl.

Glossop opened with Allen at both end, with Nathan outshining his dad and only going for 6 runs, whilst Jason was abit leaky in his second over but after 4 overs Hadfield were only 28-0. The Allens setting the Vets off on a solid footing. Steve Page and Tim Halpin were up next, Page kept it tight with some fast bowling, Halpin conceded a few fours but made the breakthrough and removed the opener with a full length swinging delivery, ripping out the middle stump. The vets were off and the mood was positive. Lewis Calvert and Rick Ingham bowled the middle overs. Calvert was exceptional, only going for 3 runs and picking up the second wicket, again bowling a lovely full length delivery, again bowled, again middle stump out. Ingham, having just pulled a hamstring went through the pain barrier and took one for the team, completing his 2 overs for 19 runs. Thornborrow came on for his bowling debut and bowled some wizardry fast spin, claiming his first wicket for the vets, bowling the Hadfield batsmen through the gate, with Taylor at the other end supporting, getting the ball to the swing. Wilde behind the stumps was having an excellent game, keeping it tight and increasing the pressure on Hadfield. Steve Kirkham and Phil Haggerty bowled the last 4. Hadfield were starting to swing at this point but Kirkham bowled an excellent penultimate over only going for 1 run. Haggerty picked up a wicket, caught by Taylor at mid on. Hadfield had run out of gas abit and finished on 143 for 4, but with the exception of a few over throws and a few dropped catches, Glossop were excellent in the field and Hadfield were feeling the pressure.

Calvert and Haggerty opened for Glossop and got off to a flier but were stopped in their tracks when a light shower came over and Hadfield decided it was time for the covers to come on. With some light pressure from Glossop and the rain easing abit the covers came off 10 minutes later and Glossop set about chasing down the total. Both openers batted with class and both retired on 25, bringing Wilde and Halpin to the crease. Wilde crashed a few boundaries to the fence, Halpin looked abit tentative, scored 2 but got out to a full straight delivery off Joe Faye who had started to make the ball sing. Page was next in and instantly showed his class, flicking a 6 of his hips. Wilde batted well but was run out 13. The game was in the balance but Glossop were ahead of the run rate. In came Taylor, started slow and just turned over the strike to Page with some singles as the field had begun to spread. Page continued his assault, got to 24, went for the big hit but was caught on the boundary. In came Jay Allen. Taylor started to accelerate and raced to 28 not out with a couple off flicks off his legs going to the boundary. Taylor retired and in came Kirckham. Glossop needed 10 off the last 3.5 overs. Surely the Vets were going to cruise to victory. But Hadfield had saved their best 2 bowers and with Glossop’s recent results it was always going to be tough getting over the line. Kirkham got a peach and was bowled, Thornborrow next in, got a 3rd ball duck, Nathan Allen got a first baller and trudged off to the pavilion. Hadfield’s bowler had just bowled a 3 wicket maiden over and Glossop looked on the ropes. In comes Ingham, Glossop’s number 11 with a hamstring injury, quick singles were going to be tough. Glossop now needed 4 off 12. 19th over starts and second ball Jay Allen plays across the line and is bowled but scored a valuable 8 runs in tough conditions. Fortunately Glossop had 3 retired batsmen and back came Haggerty. His fine form early on calmed the nerves and a big hit would see us over the line but first ball back in, another wicket. What was going on. Hadfield were buoyed …Glossop were nervous. Due to Ingham not being able to run, Hadfield offered Glossop a runner..Taylor came in to run. Ingham was facing….he knocked the ball into a gap ..quick single was on..Taylor called Calvert through… But Ingham set off aswel… think he thought we’d get 2 runs if we all ran! We all made it. Calvert then took things into his own hands and calmly knocked the winning runs. Glossop vets were back and had beaten their arch rivals.

Man of the Match – Lewis Calvert. Super batting at the top of the order, excellent bowling with a wicket and came back when we needed him and hit the winning runs.

Glossop have a week off next week but back the week after against Mottram – and we owe them 1.

The Showdown at Sunset

Trouble Brews in the Heat

It was a sunny evening in the wild plains of the cricketing frontier. The Law Men, leather-hatted and squinting into the glare, took the field first. The opposition Outlaws came out all guns blazing, holstering sixes and firing boundaries. The scoreboard galloped like a runaway stallion, and for a moment, it looked like the Outlaws were in for a long night.

But just when the storm looked set to roll in, the sheriffs started laying down the law. Lines were tightened, traps were laid, and the bullets stopped flying.

Then came the first duel.

The opposition opener, once bold and brash, found himself hog-tied by dot balls. In a moment of panic, he made a break for it. He didn't make it far. A direct hit from Chris Sonczak—clean as a gunslinger's draw—sent him packing. Next ball, Davo drew fast and snared another. Two gone, momentum slowed.

Enter young Maltby, the fresh-red-faced deputy on debut. He bowled like he'd ridden these parts before—tight, composed, and full of promise.

But the enemy wasn’t done. A moustachioed South African miscreant, fierce and flamboyant, stood defiant in the dust, cracking shots with grit and guile (if only his banter behind the stumps was a cracking). Still, wickets fell like tumbleweeds. Phil Rhodes spun his web, subtle and

deadly, and Chris Sonczak—sharpshooter supreme—fired off another direct hit. Across the rolling North Road plane, the ball, it seemed, had made a pact with Matt Sonczak—four catches flew to him like iron to a magnet.

The Marshalls had done their job. The opposition Outlaws limped to 118 for 9 from 20 overs—a respectable tally, but short of high noon destruction.

A Duel Under the Dying Light

As the sun dipped low, painting the sky in oranges and fire, the Law Men’s top guns holstered their bats and stepped into the street. Chris Coll and Chris Sonczak: calm, composed, and short.

Coll opened with lusty blows, knocking the dust off the scoreboard with every strike. Sonczak, his partner in justice, rotated strike like clockwork. The scoreboard ticked above the required rate, and the tension in the fielding gang grew. All they could manage were a few bitter mutterings behind the stumps—not funny, not clever.

Coll, his work done, retired with a nod, handing over the reins. Sonczak stayed, finally finding his range with a few well-timed shots before tipping his hat and retiring too.

Then came a stumble.

The Chambers boys—Rob and Tom—rode in but didn't last long. Quick exits, no time for duels. But where there’s grit, there’s always a way.

Gino, all flair and footwork, and Phil Rhodes, bringing balance and poise, stepped up. They brought a dash of style, keeping the wagon rolling. Just when it looked like they’d take it home, a twist: Gino retired, and Rhodes fell for 19. The saloon doors creaked open again—Will R and Davo entered the fray.

Will, wielding a new weapon, looked the part—but it wasn’t his day. First ball, out cold. Silence fell.

But Maltby returned, the debutant with the solution to the Mexican stand-off, and joined Davo. Calm, steady, unshaken—they saw it through. No drama. The Outlaws fought the Law; but, the Law won!

Swinging Saloon Doors

With the job done and the dust settled, the Sheriff’s holstered their bats, tipped their hats, and headed off for drinks and Italian food. Stories were shared, laughter echoed, and eyes turned to the man of the hour.

Maltby, the new deputy, took home the match award—not for wickets, not for runs, but for an enthusiastic throw, which he muscled to absolutely nowhere. Wild. Unpredictable. Glorious.

In these parts, they don’t remember the score.

They remember the show.

On behalf of the Glossop Cricket & Bowling Club Executive Committee, I'd like to warmly invite you to an Extraordinary General Meeting taking place at 8pm on Thursday 22nd May 2025.

As per the club’s constitution, the Executive Committee has recently recommended a list of Honorary Life Members, and so the purpose of this EGM is for our membership to approve these recommendations. The meeting should take no longer than 5 minutes.

Match Report: Broadbottom v Vets (13/5/25)

Cozball – Season 3 - Can they go UNBEATEN again??

The weather Gods were shining brightly as Glossop Vets started their 2025 campaign with a tough away trip to Broadbottom. After an unbeaten 2024 season, the pressure was on to see if the team could recreate the highs of the 24 season……and in this first outing they didn’t disappoint. Glossop gave a debut to Tom Rogers, and after some rather hectic and considerably dangerous catching practise, Broadbottom were put into bat.

Glossop opened with Jay Allen and Rick Ingham, possibly the oldest opening pair in the history of cricket, but both started well and in the 3rd over Allen came to life and struck with a lovely length delivery that was played on to the stumps….and the Vets were away.

Allen struck again in the same over, clean bowled, and had now claimed both openers to finish with match best figures of 2 overs, 2 runs, 2 wickets. First change saw Richard Marsden and Sam Alder take the attack to Broady. Marsden was steady but it was Alder who was causing issues and he got his just reward for good line and length with a fizzing delivery that took out the middle stump. His first wicket for Glossop Vets …the first of many.

Glossop kept the pressure on with good fielding which was paramount on the fast outfield but with Broadbottom middle order starting to free their shoulders abit, Glossop needed to make a breakthrough. Up step Tom Rogers and Steve Kirkham. Rogers kept it tight from one end but it was Kirkham who broke the hearts of Broady fans, striking twice, the first an fat edge to point where Calvert took the catch, this time with his hands and not his face, and the second a lovely dipping yorker leaving the Broadbottom batsman cleaned bowled.

The final 4 overs brought some success for Broady with some big 6 hitting but 2 further wickets helped to keep the score chaseable. Taylor struck the stumps and Calvert found the edge, which was gobbled up by Andy Wilde behind the stumps, capping a fine performance by Wilde in the field.

Broadbottom finished on 120 for 7 . Let the Chase begin...

Glossop’s 20+ fans were expectant of a victory but with the sun going down Glossop would need to get a move on. Ingham and Taylor opened. Taylor took the majority of the strike in the first 3 overs, scoring a quick 14 before being cleaned bowled. Wilde came to the crease and started strong with 2 quick boundaries and some good running with Ingham. Ingham was going steadily along anchoring the team. Wilde was eventually out for 16, coming down the wicket to some spin, the ball dipped, Wilde missed it and was stumped by Broadbottoms very impressive under 15s Wk.

This brought Marsden to the crease with Glossop needing a destructive innings from their number 4 to stay ahead of the run rate. Marsden started abit nervously but once he got his eye in, he started hitting the boundaries. Marsden and Ingham dovetailed well and both approached 25. Marsden was the first to reach the milestone with a crunching boundary ending on 28 not out. Ingham was soon to follow with a boundary of his own capping his best batting performance with the vets, scoring 27 not out.

Allen and Halpin were now at the crease with Glossop needing around 30 runs for victory. Both batted well, moving the ball around and guided Glossop home with 5 overs to spare. Halpin finishing on 15 not out and Allen on 14 not out. Its shows the depth of Glossop’s team that Marsh, Calvert, Alder, Kirkham and Rogers were left in the shed but there is serious competition for places in this batting line up.

Glossop ended on 123 -2 and took their first scalp of the season.

Build up

The resounding win the previous week gave the players a streak of arrogance in their stride, and as the players walked over the boundary rope onto the field from the pavilion, it was less Hairy Dog and more Reservoir Dogs.

Diamonds

Chris Col, and Pagey were unable to make this game and with Kit and Ali pulling out a few days before, it left a last-minute scramble to field a full eleven.

Phil R (Mt White), Parker (Mr Grey Whites), Rob C, Gino, Davo (Mr Blue), Matt Stafford (Mr Straight One), Haggis, Phil B (Mr Pink Eye), Chris S, Matt Sonczak, Will R (Mr Red).

Put your hands up

We lost the toss, and the visitors elected to bat. Like in all Tarantino movies the scene is set early, usually in a restaurant. So, who better to step up than Mr Pink Eye to take wickets with the 4th and 5th deliveries of the day. Rob C tying down the batters and torturing them at the other end, on comes Haggis putting another tick against the body count, Mr Grey Whites ditto. Mr Red grabbing a victim, all this was before Mr Blue in one of the most unusual moments of play nearly got wiped out himself, self-preservation kicked in, it was nearly caught and bowled, but the hard tense hands only served to deflect the projectile onto the stumps, and with the non-striker out of his ground we had another. Mr Straight One couldn’t get the batters to miss a straight one, Matt Sonczak and a bleeding Mr White tried too but to no avail, Chris S did provide another breakthrough before the visitors limped back to the rendezvous point leaving a target of 89 to chase.

Mexican stand off

We had an undercover cop as the oppo found themselves a man down so double fielding duties for Mr Brown. Then a plot twist as Mr White and Mr Grey Whites opened, much to the pleasure of any action movie buffs, not just because we could now tell the difference between the two in the middle, but because this was as close to Hollywood as we are likely to see from Mr White who is usually a Dusk til Dawn type of batter, Mr Grey Whites matching him with lustful blows. Rob C, Gino and another red inker from Mr Blue contributing to another blood bath massacre, and nobody could say they were stuck in the middle with you.

The teas were as good as they come, but we didn’t tip the waitress. Nominations were given for what would usually be worthy winners. But the run out from Mr Blue really was something to behold.

Build up

Last season started with optimism, fresh off the back of a few net sessions. The optimism was soon replaced by frustration as the first half a dozen games were called off due to the weather. This season things started differently; In the run-up we had 1 net session attended to by just our 2 openers. Our first match was to be away at Broadbottom on a pleasant ground with great views of the surrounding hills. The weather was ideal, the only thing visible in the bluest of skies were the aircraft preparing to land at Manchester and like the contrails left in their wake, the sense of optimism still lingered, confirmed by the purchasing of cricket trousers by Will R and new boots by Pagey.

Line up

Will Parker failed a late fitness test and was replaced by a probably more injured than Will Matt Stafford. So, the team we had out consisted of Chris S (C), Chis Col, Rob Chambers, Gino (W), Davo, Will R, Phil B, Phil Rhodes, Matt Stafford, Haggis and Pagey.

First up

We were batting first. However, some things don’t change, and a cut and paste retired not out was placed next to Chris S (25) row in the scorebook. Joining him in the retired not outs Chris Col (26), Gino (25) and Davo (25). We should get a stamp made saying ‘retired not out’ to make it easier and quicker for Pagey.

Will R hit a fantastic six to finish 10 not out and Phil B also finished unbeaten on 2. The wicket of Rob Chambers (caught on 8) being the only cause for celebration for the hosts.

Second up

Broadbottom had to chase down 162, But with a short boundary down the hill we knew we had had to bowl well. Of that we did to a man. Before the opposition could blink Rob Chambers had a victim, with Gino taking a stumping, Phil B at the other end picked up a wicket clean bowled. Then another wicket for Rob Chambers caught at mid-off by Matt Stafford, a bowling change and another clean bowled this time Haggis doing the damage.

The early wickets set the tone, Phil B showing his silky footwork passing a long off boundary bound attempt along the line to deep extra cover. Phil Rhodes, Matt Stafford, Davo, and Pagey didn’t get the luck they deserved. But by the time Chris Col took a good catch fizzing towards him at deepish mid-wicket off the bowling from Will Reddington the very notion of a chase was fading quicker than the sunlight, and Broadbottom just wanted to survive. Matt Stafford helping them in this regard by not even getting close to a dolly off Chris Col. The innings closed with Broadbottom trailing by about 80.

Eat up

The teas were top notch, the beer was as lively as Phil B in the field. The moment of the match going to Will Reddington for his six.

Glossop CC 1st XI off to a Winning Start in the GMCL Championship

Glossop Cricket Club’s 1st XI kicked off their 2025 GMCL Championship campaign in style on Saturday with a confident 7-wicket victory away at Moorside. Chasing 126 for victory, Glossop reached their target in just under 30 overs, led by a composed half-century from Matt Sonczak and a polished unbeaten 34 from captain Chris Gill .

The day heralded the start of a new era for Glossop with four players made their 1st XI league debuts — Owais Shah , Max Hatzoglou , Digby Evans , and Tom Lane — all talented cricketers in their own right, signalling some exciting times ahead at North Road.

With the sun shining and conditions helpful for seam bowling, Moorside won the toss and elected to bat first. Glossop’s bowling attack, featuring a mix of youth and experience, wasted little time in making inroads. The standout performer was debutant Digby Evans , who bowled with excellent rhythm and control to finish with superb figures of 4 for 24 from 8.2 overs. Evans struck early and returned later in the innings to clean up the tail, showing maturity beyond his years.

James Eyre chipped in with 2 for 18 in a probing 7-over spell, while William Hargreaves supported brilliantly with 3 for 28. Fresh from a stint Down Under, Matt Sonczak also claimed a wicket and helped dry up the runs in the middle overs. Tom Lane, also making his debut, bowled with genuine pace and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket, ending with figures of 0 for 27 from 8 overs — a performance that bodes well for the season ahead.

Moorside were eventually dismissed for 125 in 48.2 overs.

In reply, Glossop lost debutant Owais Sha h early for 4, bowled by Saqib. Max Hatzoglou also was adjudged LBW, although early days both players have a pedigree which means that they’ll settle quickly at this level. When David Wilde was trapped lbw for 17, Glossop found themselves at 45 for 3, but any nerves were quickly settled by the experienced pair of Gill and Sonczak.

Their unbroken 81-run partnership saw the visitors home without further loss. Gill played the anchor role, guiding the innings with authority, while Sonczak took the attack to the bowlers with a fluent 51* off just 55 deliveries — striking seven boundaries and a six.

It was a commanding win for Glossop, underpinned by an excellent bowling performance and a calm chase under pressure. The debutants brought fresh energy and enthusiasm, and with such a strong team performance to build from, confidence will be high heading into the next round of fixtures.

The 1st XI return to North Road this coming Saturday vs Greenfield where they’ll look to continue their winning start in front of the home crowd.

Glossop 2nd XI Edge Past Moorside in Season Opener Thriller

Glossop CC 2nd XI made a strong start to their 2025 GMCL Division 5 East campaign with a narrow yet impressive 6-run victory over Moorside 2nd XI at North Road on Saturday.

Batting first, Glossop posted 154 all out in 38.2 overs, led by a composed innings of 41 from Ben Wilson, who anchored the top order. He received good support from Jarrod Holmes, who added a steady 19. Despite wickets falling regularly, Glossop were able to battle their way to a defendable total, with the father and son partnership of 39 between John (30) and Jack Stopford (14) though Wajid Khan posed a serious threat for the visitors with a superb spell of 5 for 38.

In response, Moorside looked well in the chase but were ultimately bowled out for 148 in 39.1 overs. The standout with the ball for Glossop was Joe Doody, who claimed 4 for 38 from an 11-over spell, regularly disrupting the visitors’ progress. Sam Dyson also impressed with figures of 3 for 21, whilst skipper David Allen returned a vital 2 for 7 at the end to seal the win for the home side.

Behind the stumps, John Stopford had a fine day with five dismissals—three catches and two stumpings—capping off an excellent all-round performance.

A solid all-round display with bat, ball and in the field got Glossop’s season off to a winning start.

Glossop Cricket Club is thrilled to announce the signing of 18-year-old Tom Lane, a top young prospect fresh from a successful season with Old Glossop Cricket Club, where he played a vital role in their 2024 Bissenden Cup victory in the Derbyshire and Cheshire League.

Known for his impressive bowling skills, Tom has quickly established himself as one of the league’s standout young players.

In 2024, Tom delivered stats of note with the ball: across 156.2 overs, he took 38 wickets at an average of 13.61, with best figures of 4 for 31. The former Derbyshire Pathway cricketer has been able to demonstrate his wicket-taking ability and handy batting skills over the course of the season. This, coupled with his experience in Old Glossop’s memorable season make him a valuable addition as Glossop builds a team for the future.

Tom’s arrival strengthens our squad as we prepare for another season in the Greater Manchester Cricket League. Glossop Cricket Club has made a major signing for the 2025 season, bringing in one of the region’s brightest young talents, Digby Evans.

Fresh off from an excellent 2024 season in the Derbyshire and Cheshire Cricket League, where Evans dominated for Hayfield CC with 50 wickets, which included an amazing 8 for 26, Glossop’s acquisition of this rising star signals their intent to make waves in the Greater Manchester Cricket League (GMCL) next season.

‘Diggers’ has been a force to reckon with on the local cricket scene. As part of Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s Academy, he’s been on a clear trajectory toward a high standard of cricket. His inclusion in Derbyshire’s 2024 Boys' Academy was a nod to his consistency with the ball and all-around cricketing ability.

Glossop Cricket Clubs Under 15s triumphed in a thrilling 9-run victory over previously unbeaten Heaton CC to secure the Greater Manchester Cricket League 2024 Champion of Champions title. Heaton, who had dominated the GMCL West Performance League, brought plenty of talent, showing their quality with both bat and ball. Their fielding was exceptional, with stunning catches in key moments. Despite Heaton’s strong showing, a superb all-round performance from Joe Doody and crucial contributions from Glossop’s young stars saw them edge past their rivals to lift the trophy.

After winning the toss, Glossop chose to bat first. Alfie Peck, promoted up the order to provide early momentum, made 17 off 21 balls, running sharply between the wickets with Joseph Bolton. Peck hit a couple of boundaries including a steepling 6 to get the Glossop crowd roaring. The pair's 42-run partnership for the first wicket gave Glossop a solid foundation, despite some quality bowling from Heaton. 13-year-old Bolton looked in classy form, rotating the strike effectively and playing a crucial role in keeping the innings steady. His composed 25 from 35 balls anchored Glossop’s efforts.

Heaton’s fielders made a significant impact with key dismissals. Olly Boothroyd, who had looked in good touch, was dismissed for 14 after a brilliant catch at cover by Dharmik Patel. Joe Doody chipped in with 19 valuable runs from 16 balls, including a mighty six. Glossop Skipper, Ben Wilson, had steadied the ship, rotating the strike well with some intelligent cricket. He scored 19 off 20 balls before being caught at mid-wicket by a diving Eesaa Dawood in the final over, another great effort in the field by Heaton. Despite these setbacks, Glossop managed to keep the scoreboard moving. Max Mulvey, returning after several weeks out, contributed an unbeaten 13, punishing the bad balls and rotating the strike well. Glossop finished on 115-5 from their 20 overs, setting a challenging target. Heatons pick of their bowlers was the impressive Advaith Govindu who returned 1 for 12 off 3 overs.

Heaton would be confident after a strong season, began their chase with intent, but Joe Doody put Glossop on top early with a superb spell of disciplined bowling. His 4-over stint yielded figures of 1-7, including a maiden, immediately putting pressure on Heaton’s top order. Doody’s removal of Advaith Govindu for a duck set the tone, leaving Heaton on the back foot. Olly Boothroyd provided solid support, trapping Adam Bhuta LBW for 6, leaving Heaton struggling at 8-2.

William Lucas (26) and Dharmik Patel (29) fought back with a key partnership, taking the game into a tense phase. Patel, however, fell to Joseph Bolton, caught by Joe Doody while attempting to push the scoring rate. A crucial moment came when Dan Keeley pulled off a quick-thinking run-out. After the ball ricocheted off Wilson’s knee, Keeley reacted swiftly to throw to keeper Boothroyd for him to remove the bails and turn the game in Glossop’s favour at a critical juncture.

After a lengthy period out with injury, Keeley showed signs of some rhythm and pace with the ball, picking up the important wicket of Tobias James, who he caught off his own bowling from one that popped. Keeley almost had another wicket after Nathan Allen took a great catch, only for it to be called a no-ball.

Heatons Will Hamilton strode to the crease and started to punish some loose Glossop deliveries. It looked like Hamilton was going to the win the game for the home side, but a defining moment came when Ben Wilson produced a stunning diving catch off his own bowling to remove Hamilton who had turned the game around with 27 off 17 balls. Despite Wilson’s first over going for 11 runs, the Glossop skipper held his nerve, finishing with figures of 2 for 17 in 3 overs and playing a pivotal role in closing out the match. Max Mulvey then sealed the win with a cool final run-out to dismiss Harley Hague, as Heaton were bowled out for 106 in 19.4 overs, giving Glossop a memorable 9-run victory.

Glossop celebrated, Heaton were disappointed but it was a fitting finale to the GMCL junior league finals day hosted excellently by Heaton. Despite this loss, Heaton had won the u18s final earlier in the day so it wasn’t all doom and gloom for a club clearly doing things right with their juniors. The game was played in the right spirit and umpired well by officials John Mayer and Dave Bardsley.

The umpires awarded Joe Doody Player of the Match for his outstanding all-round contribution. His spell of 1-7 in 4 overs with the new ball, combined with sharp fielding and a vital 19 runs with the bat, made him the standout player in this closely contested final.

Heaton showed their class throughout the match with strong performances, particularly with some great grabs in key stages of the first half. Despite falling just short, Heaton’s all-round efforts were those of a strong unit, pushing Glossop to the very end.

Glossop’s collective effort was key to this victory, with other notable contributions from young guns Henry Marsh, Lewis Allen, and Archie Edgar in the field, saving crucial runs and maintaining pressure on Heaton. Glossop stepped up when it mattered, ensuring they could overcome the oppositions quality to claim the title.

So Glossop close their season as the Greater Manchester Cricket League u15 champions. A very fitting end to their campaign having only lost one game all year to Sandiacre in the Derbyshire County Cup Final at Denby. It’s been an incredibly positive year for this side winning both their regional league and the GMCL East Performance League. The exciting part for club is that their oldest players are only 14 years old, meaning this talented squad will return next season at the Under 15 level with another year of experience and development under their belts. The future looks bright for Glossop CC and for this close-knit group of players. Well done lads, you did us proud……winter well.

Saddleworth CC 2nd XI Secure Victory Over Glossop CC 2nd XI by 43 Runs

On Saturday, September 7, 2024, Glossop CC 2nd XI traveled to face Saddleworth CC 2nd XI in what turned out to be a low-scoring affair. Despite strong individual performances from Stephen Bates and David Allen, Glossop fell short by 43 runs, with Saddleworth emerging victorious after defending a modest total of 127.

Saddleworth’s Innings: Steady Partnerships and Glossop’s Strong Bowling

Glossop, having won the toss and electing to field on a green ‘un, put in a commendable bowling effort. Stephen Bates led the attack with an outstanding performance, taking 5 wickets for 36 runs in 12.5 overs. He was ably supported by David Allen, who claimed 3 wickets for 35 runs in 12 overs. Glossop’s fielding also played a key role, with two run-outs, including both Ben Corbett and Max Wren, executed by Mark Allen, Dave Allen respectively.

Saddleworth’s innings got off to a cautious start, with Ben Corbett managing 10 runs before being run out. Nathan Gallagher top-scored with 28 runs, holding the innings together, while Kamaljeet Singh contributed 27 runs with some aggressive hitting. Despite these efforts, Glossop's disciplined bowling, including tight spells from Boothroyd and Doody restricted Saddleworth to 127 all out in 35.5 overs.

Glossop’s Reply: A Struggle to Build Partnerships

Glossop’s chase started poorly, losing opener John Stopford for a duck in the second over. Ben Wilson and Stephen Bates tried to rebuild the innings, with Bates top-scoring with 38 runs, including 5 fours and 1 six. However, the rest of the batting lineup struggled to support him.

Ben Wilson batted patiently for 50 balls, contributing 8 runs, while Olly Boothroyd added 11 runs but could not push on. Ryan McGrath from Saddleworth proved to be the match-winner with the ball, taking an impressive 6 wickets for just 5 runs in 5.2 overs, decimating Glossop’s middle and lower order. The wickets fell in clusters, with an odd decision going Saddleworths way, with Glossop being bowled out for 84 in 32.4 overs, falling 43 runs short of the target.

On Saturday, September 7th, 2024, Glossop CC 1st XI hosted Prestwich CC in an important GMCL Premier League 2 clash for Glossop’s survival. Despite early promise, Glossop ultimately missed the opportunity to secure a much-needed win, as they were defeated by 48 runs after failing to chase a revised target of 188.

The day started positively for Glossop, who won the toss and elected to field. With a disciplined bowling attack, they aimed to restrict Prestwich to a manageable total. Early breakthroughs came when James Eyre and William Hargreaves struck key blows, dismissing Stuart Els (32) and Sam Kershaw (9). However, the Prestwich top order, led by Tom Gibson, played patiently, accumulating runs to steady the innings. Gibson’s well-crafted 64 off 124 balls formed the backbone of Prestwich’s total, while captain and wicketkeeper James Wharmby added a valuable 45 runs off 69 balls, keeping the scoreboard ticking.

Glossop’s bowlers toiled hard, with William Hargreaves emerging as the standout performer, claiming 3-56 in his 15 overs. James Eyre and professional player Irosh Samarasooriya also contributed, each picking up two wickets. Despite some strong individual performances with the ball, Glossop missed opportunities in the field, including some crucial dropped catches, which allowed Prestwich to add valuable runs toward the end of the innings. Lower-order resistance from Lewis Smith (10) and useful contributions from extras (20) helped Prestwich reach a respectable total of 187-9 from their allotted 50 overs.

Glossop's task was then to chase a revised target of 188, which was achievable but required a strong start. Unfortunately, their innings began on a shaky note as they lost David Wilde for just 2 runs in the second over. Lee Dale and Chris Gill formed the backbone of the innings, with Dale playing a determined and patient knock, scoring 40 off 122 balls. Gill, slightly more aggressive in his approach, struck 34 runs off 58 balls, including four boundaries.

The pair seemed to steady the ship, taking the score to 55. However, just as they began to build momentum, Gill was caught off the bowling of Prestwich’s sub-professional, Pramod Maduwantha. From there, Glossop's middle order collapsed under pressure. Irosh Samarasooriya looked to inject some energy into the chase with a brisk 22 off 33 balls, but his run-out due to a sharp piece of fielding from Ryan Maddock proved to be a turning point. Wickets continued to tumble, as Andrew Cadd, Daniel Senior, and Matt Sonczak all fell cheaply.

With the top and middle order dismantled, the tail had too much to do. Sam Elliott fought valiantly with an unbeaten 16, but tight bowling from Nathan Bailey (3-46) and Andy Bradley (2-26) ensured Glossop were bowled out for 140 in 45.3 overs, well short of the target.

The defeat will sting for Glossop, especially given the opportunities they missed throughout the game. In the field, dropped chances and lapses in concentration allowed Prestwich to accumulate more runs than they might have, and their batting lacked the partnerships necessary to mount a successful chase. With run-outs and lower-order wickets falling cheaply, the middle and lower order crumbled under pressure. This missed opportunity cost Glossop valuable points in their attempt to maintain their premier status.

While Lee Dale’s and Chris Gill’s performances with the bat were commendable, Glossop will be reflecting on their inability to convert promising moments into match-winning efforts. For Prestwich, the all-round performances of Tom Gibson and the bowling attack, particularly Bailey and Bradley, proved decisive in securing the victory and taking home the valuable five points.

Glossop CC Under 15s Reach Greater Manchester Cricket League Champion of Champions Final

Glossop CC Under 15s have once again secured their place in the Greater Manchester Cricket League Champions of Champions Final, set for Saturday, 21st September 2024, at Heaton CC.

This final marks the culmination of the season for both sides having reached the final 2 from some 40+ teams in the GMCL.

This is Glossops second consecutive appearance in such a final, having been runners-up in last year’s U13s final. Glossop have again won their regional league and then topped the top divisional performance league without dropping a point. The team will be hoping to go one step further this time and bring home the prestigious trophy. However, they are up against a very strong Heaton CC which remained unbeaten in their relative performance league too.

Key match winning contributions from consistent performers like Olly Boothroyd, Joseph Bolton, and Joe Doody have been vital in both chasing and defending totals. Nathan Allen has provided valuable wickets and runs in big moments, whilst all-rounders Max Mulvey, Jacob Dyson, Alfie Peck and Laurence Riley have been formidable in the bowling attack and supported with crucial runs. The side, led by captain Ben Wilson, who has also excelled with bat and ball, has performed consistently throughout the season with only one loss vs Sandiacre in the Derbyshire County Cup Final. Having lost talented players Lucas Kenyon and Dan Keeley to injury earlier in the year, the Glossop Lions are looking forward to having both boys back in the side. Harry Dyson remains injured though and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Supporting the older players, promising U13 stars Henry Marsh, Lewis Allen and Archie Edgar have made their mark, showing great potential and making notable contributions in games. Their involvement has added depth to the squad and highlights the future strength of Glossop cricket.

With a strong and positive team spirit and the whole club behind them, the side is ready to challenge Heaton CC and hopefully go one further this year. Good luck to the lads!

Glossop CC Dominate Denton St Lawrence in Comprehensive Victory

On a bright Saturday afternoon, Glossop CC 1st XI secured a commanding 9-wicket victory over Denton St Lawrence CC 1st XI. After winning the toss, Glossop elected to field, a decision that paid off handsomely as they bowled out the hosts for just 104 runs. In response, Glossop chased the target with ease, reaching 108-1 in 18.5 overs.

Denton St Lawrence Innings: Struggles Against Glossop’s Bowlers

Denton St Lawrence’s batting lineup struggled to find any rhythm against a disciplined Glossop bowling attack. The innings got off to the worst possible start, with opener Kabeel Akram trapped LBW for a duck by Glossop's professional, Irosh Samarasooriya, on the very first ball of the match.

The lone bright spot in Denton’s innings was Dan Moriarty, who fought hard for his 53 runs, striking 6 fours and 2 sixes off 73 balls. However, Moriarty found little support from his teammates, as wickets tumbled around him.

Ninad Kadam added 12 runs before being caught off Samarasooriya, while Scott Kirwin and Mark Dillnutt managed just 2 and 4 runs, respectively. A direct run-out from Lee Dale saw the captain, Adam Hawley, depart for 1, and the middle-order collapse continued with lower-order batsmen offering little resistance.

James Eyre shone with the ball, taking 3 wickets for just 6 runs in 8 tight overs, including dismissing both Jody Clough and Kian Clough. Meanwhile, Samarasooriya picked up 4 wickets, finishing with figures of 4-27 in 9.2 overs, displaying his class. William Hargreaves also bowled a tight spell, picking up 1 wicket for 11 runs in 6 overs. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 104 in 34.2 overs.

Glossop’s Reply: A Confident Chase

Glossop’s reply was confident and clinical. Opener Andrew Cadd got the innings off to a brisk start, scoring 13 runs off 16 balls, but he was bowled by Ninad Kadam with the score at 25. From there, Lee Dale and Skipper Chris Gill took charge, guiding Glossop to victory with ease.

A resurgent Lee Dale (and now wicketkeeper-batsman) played a fantastic knock, remaining unbeaten on 51 from 55 balls, including 4 boundaries and 3 sixes. His aggressive approach put Denton St Lawrence’s bowlers under pressure from the outset. Chris Gill provided strong support, scoring 31 not out from 43 balls, with 3 boundaries and 1 six, as the duo comfortably chased down the target in just 18.5 overs.

The Denton St Lawrence bowlers struggled to contain Glossop’s batting lineup, with Scott Kirwin and Harvey Cliff going wicketless. Ninad Kadam managed to pick up the only wicket but was unable to stop Glossop from cruising to victory.

Glossop’s dominance was clear throughout the match, with their bowlers setting the tone by restricting Denton St Lawrence to a low total. Irosh Samarasooriya and James Eyre led the bowling attack with exceptional spells, while Lee Dale and Chris Gill ensured a smooth and comfortable chase. Glossop CC 2nd XI Crush Droylsden to Secure League Status and Showcase Young Talent

Glossop CC 2nd XI secured a commanding 10-wicket victory over Droylsden CC 2nd XI on Saturday, August 31st, ensuring their place in the Greater Manchester Cricket League Division 4 East for next season. The match was dominated by a superb bowling performance led by Glossop's talented junior players, followed by a clinical chase that sealed the win without losing a wicket.

Droylsden CC, having won the toss, opted to bat first but were soon under pressure from Glossop’s youthful and dynamic bowling attack. The visitors struggled to cope with the pace and precision of Olly Boothroyd, Glossop's exciting young fast bowler. Boothroyd delivered an excellent opening spell, conceding only 9 runs from his 6 overs. Though he didn’t take any wickets in this match, his consistent line and length built pressure that set the tone for the innings. Known for his powerful hitting, Boothroyd also offers much promise with the bat and is becoming a key all-rounder for the side.

At the other end, Joe Doody, the talented left-arm spinner, was the star with the ball. Bowling a marathon spell of 14 overs, Doody ran through Droylsden’s batting lineup with figures of 5 for 39. His control and ability to turn the ball were too much for the opposition, and his haul took him past 30 wickets for the season. Doody’s consistency throughout the year has been a significant factor in Glossop’s success, and this performance was another example of his potential as a future star.

Stephen Bates, one of the experienced heads in the team, provided valuable support to the younger players, picking up 3 wickets for 25 runs in his 11 overs. His disciplined bowling further weakened Droylsden’s efforts to build any partnerships.

In the closing stages of the innings, Ben Wilson, Derbyshire Pathway off-spinner cleaned up the tail with figures of 2 for 7 from 2.1 overs. Wilson's ability to contribute with both bat and ball has seen him develop into a key all-rounder for Glossop’s 2nd XI this season.

Droylsden’s batting was a little underwhelming given their recent form, with Michael Schofield (22) and Dylan Francis (20) offering the only resistance. However, they were eventually bowled out for a mere 80 in 33.1 overs. A few notable absences from their side likely impacting their performance.

Glossop’s Reply: Unbeaten Opening Stand

Chasing just 81 for victory, Glossop’s opening pair made short work of the target. John Stopford, the wicketkeeper-batsman, played a fluent innings, scoring 46 not out from 53 balls, including eight boundaries. His aggressive approach ensured that there was never any pressure on the chase.

At the other end, Ben Wilson, continuing his all-round contribution, played a measured knock of 23 not out from 70 balls. His partnership with Stopford was unbroken, as Glossop cruised to the target in just 19 overs without losing a wicket, sealing a comprehensive 10-wicket win.

Youth at the Forefront of Glossop’s Success

This victory was a testament to Glossop CC’s commitment to developing young cricketers. The performances of Olly Boothroyd, Joe Doody, and Ben Wilson have been pivotal to the 2nd XI’s success this season. In addition to these young talents, Jack Stopford, another developing batsman, has made regular appearances for the 2nd XI, contributing to the team’s balance. Furthermore, Joseph Bolton, a talented batting all-rounder, has been a key part of the side but is currently sidelined with injury. His return will only strengthen Glossop’s already impressive lineup.

This focus on youth development is clearly paying dividends, as the club has built a core of young players who are not only performing at a high level but also gaining invaluable experience in senior cricket. Their blend of youth and experience has ensured their safety at this level with the club looking poised for greater success in the seasons to come.

As Glossop vets continued their march towards an unbeaten season……..Hare and Hounds, their toughest test to date came to North Road in the hope they could derail this juggernaut of a team. Glossop were largely unchanged but welcomed Dave Allen and Dave Wilder into the starting 11 for their Vets debuts. The sun was shining, the wicket looked quick and the fans were gathered in expectation. Hare and Hounds were a little short so 2 of Glossop’s brightest young prospects, Olly Boothroyd and Joseph Bolton, took the call and turned out for the Hare. Glossop lost the toss and were put into Bowl.

Tim Halpin and Richard Marsden were again thrown the new ball and put the pressure straight onto the Hare batsmen with good line and length supported by good fielding. The pair restricted the Hare to only 13 runs off the first 4 overs and it was Marsden who made the breakthrough with a fuller delivery that slid under the openers bat and clattered into the stumps, his 4th bowled victim in his last 2 games. Dave Wilde and Sam Alder were up next and kept the pressure on. Their mix of pace and arrowing deliveries really unsettled the batsmen, causing abit of panic. Rob Sonzcak, feeling the pressure, slashed at a Dave Wilde delivery sending it at pace towards point where Steve Kirkham was waiting, a diving 1 handed effort high to his left stopped a certain boundary but unfortunately was unable to hold on to what would have been catch of the season.

The Hare were moving along at around 5 an over, and after recent tight games against the Hare, Glossop wouldn’t want this to increase. Dave Allen and Steve Kirkham were on next. Allen keeping it tight at his end, well supported by Kirkham who has really found his length in recent weeks. Sonzcak was on 24 and looking dangerous, Glossop didn’t want him coming back in but he was undone with a full length delivery by Kirkham, who beat the bat and took out middle stump. The danger man was gone. Colin Taylor and Steve Marsh bowled the next 4 and only went for 12 collectively, Marsh rolling back the years with some diving fielding off his own bowling to finish with figures of 2 overs for 5 runs. Glossop’s fielding had been superb, complemented by Andy Wilde behind the stumps who had his best game with the gloves.

Phil Hagerty and Paul Edgar were tasked with trying to keep the Hare under 110 runs. Both showing good pace, the Hare middle order struggled to get the ball away, when they did they both claimed a wicket. Hagerty first, taking a looping catch off his own bowling and then Edgar, caught by Dave Wilde at long off. There was still time for 1 last wicket off Edgars bowling. The Hare went for a quick single but Marsden pounced on the loose ball, quick hands got the ball to Edgar at the stumps who took the bails. Hare and Hounds were done and posted 109-5.

Glossop were dealt an early blow with opener, Hagerty, suffering with a bad back and not able to take the field. Taylor was promoted to open with Marsh and took to the crease. The Hare opened with Boothroyd and Bolton, Glossop’s under 15 starlets and both bowlers showed excellent composure and bowled superbly well. Taylor and Marsh were in all kinds of trouble and scoring was slow. Boothroyd then produced an absolute beauty to Marsh, out swinging at pace that Marsh nicked off to wicketkeeper.

Halpin came in at 3, scoring remained slow as both batsmen struggled to get the ball away but were still getting a few singles to keep the scoreboard ticking. Eventually both Taylor and Halpin got use to the pitch and started hitting a few boundaries, the most impressive was a massive 6 by Halpin who continues his impressive form with the bat. Halpin eventually retired on 27 off 25 balls and Taylor retired on 26 off 28. Glossop were looking comfortable, but the quick wickets of Marsden and Edgar caused abit of unrest and the Hare thought they had a chance now they were into the Lower Middle Order.

Andy Wilde and Steve Kirkham were at the crease, A few quick singles got Glossop back on track before Wilde started to use his power and smashed a few boundaries. Not to be out done Kirkham played a lovely sweep to the boundary for 4 and the Hare were up against it. Wilde continued to hit out and with 3 overs to go Wilde and Kirkham took a quick single and Glossop’s winning streak continued. Wilde finished with 23 not out off 18 and Kirkham with 8 from 8.

Great effort from both teams and great game played in the right spirit.

Man of the Match

A great team performance but 2 performances really stood out. Firstly Steve Kirkham, found his bowling length and claimed his first wicket for figures of 1 for 9, also great in the field, loads of energy and at the crease when winning runs hit.

Secondly, Andy Wilde. Best performance behind the stumps of date and played the innings we’ve all been waiting for showing power and class. Well done lads.

Glossop currently have 1 game left against Mottram in a few weeks, if they win they end the season unbeaten.

Match Report - Charlesworth and Chisworth Social vs Glossop CC Vets (Thursday 25th July)

A great man once said “ A winning team is made up of more than 11 men, it’s the squad that will take you to Glory’ And this couldn’t be more prevalent as Glossop vets took on their latest challenge away at Charlesworth Vets on a warm and dry Thursday evening.

Glossop were missing some big players but were fortunate that Steve Page, John Kirk and John Rathburn were available to make their debuts and they also welcomed the return of Phil Hagerty who had looked explosive in recent net sessions.

The wicket looked good, and with Glossop winning the toss, they chose to bat with the hope of posting another big score. Lewis Calvert and Phil Hagerty opened the innings and put Charlesworth under immediate pressure with some quick singles. Charlesworth were bowling some good lines but were perhaps a little short of length and were duly punished with some big hitting by Hagerty who smashed 2 big sixes and lost 2 balls in the process. Calvert wanted some of the action himself and some quick boundaries brought up the 50 partnership in the 6th over. Both Hagerty (26*) and Calvert (27*) retired not out after setting Glossop up for the perfect start.

In came Steve Page who kept things moving quickly, smashing some boundaries of his own, helped by Steve Kirkham and John Rathburn who knocked some quick singles to get Steve back on strike who capped his debut with a sublime 26 not out. To have Richard Marsden and Tim Halpin at 6 and 7 shows the depth of talent this Glossop team possess and both didn’t disappoint. Charlesworth had dropped their field due to the earlier onslaught, but both still managed to hit some glorious 4s and kept things ticking. An exciting partnership brought Halpin to 25* not out, quickly followed by Marsden (25* not out) and Glossop were looking good for a total around the 165 mark. Some tight bowling by Charlesworth in the final few overs brought some wickets but the fans were still treated to a few boundaries by Sam Alder and Andy Wilde as Glossop posted 152.

Due to the absence of Rick Ingham, Glossop needed to find a new opening strike bowler to partner Halpin and the ball was thrown to Marsden. Halpin opened up with a solid over but it was Marsden who took the spotlight. Super line and length caused all sorts of problems for the Charlesworth openers and the dead lock was broken in the second over by Marsden with a ball that scooted through and clattered into the stumps. His second over brought more success with another victim cleaned bowled. The ball after….another victim clean bowled….Marsden was on a hattrick…..The field came in, Marsden sent the ball down and it just missed the outside edge. No hattrick but a great spell gave Marsden figures of 3 for 8.

Charlesworth were rocked but with James Turley at the crease they always had a chance of mounting a challenge. Sam Alder and John Kirk bowled the next 4 and kept it tight. The mix of left arm medium pace and right arm spin caused problems and it was Kirk who created the next opportunity with a devilish ball that was lobbed out to mid wicket, a diving effort by Taylor got his hands to the ball but it popped out on landing and Kirk was denied a debut wicket. Glossop were getting further on top in the field and a great piece of fielding by John Rathburn left the Glossop man in a heap on the floor. Rathburn had to drive himself to hospital where it appears he has a dislocated shoulder, All the team wish him a quick recovery.

With Rathburn out, Glossop had to find 2 overs from somewhere, Oliver Halpin had come on for Rathburn but it was Andy Wilde who stood up, took off the wicket keeping pads and took the ball. A fine first over bowling in tandem with Steve Page kept Charlesworth on the back foot and in both their seconds overs they struck. Page first, caught by Tim Halpin at short mid off and then a wicked googly by Wilde cleaned out the Charlesworth batsman. Charlesworth was behind the rate when Steve Kirkham came on to bowl, but he kept it tight with his best figures of the season, 2 overs 6 runs 1 maiden. Calvert and Taylor bowled the last 4, Calvert as tight as ever not giving anything away and Taylor cleaned up the tail with 2 wickets, the first of which clipped the top of the bails and whilst Andy Wilde was celebrating behind the stumps, promptly hit him in the centre of the forehead sending the keeper down. Fortunately he recovered, as the next ball was edged, dropped short of Page at slip who feathered it to Kirkham at gully who fired it in to Wilde who took off the bails for another runout stumping for Glossop’s Keeper.

Charlesworth ended up on 108 and Glossop had won by 44 runs. A superb team performance where every player contributed. Glossop don’t just win, they offer comedy aswel which was apparent when Phil Hagerty, when looking for a ball fell though a fence and onto barbed wire. He survived and Glossop go Marching on.

Man of the Match

After a tough outing last time, Richard Marsden came back with a bang scoring 25 not out and taking 3 wickets for 8 runs. A superb all round performance and well deserved MOM.

Glossop are now 4 wins out of 4 and welcome Hare and Hounds to North Road in a few weeks time. Another tough test, but one I think as a squad we can more than cope with.

Tonight, Glossop Vets welcomed Broadbottom Veterans to North Road and hoped to continue their strong start to the season. Glossop lost the toss and were put into bat but were hoping to post a big score as weather and pitch conditions were favourable.

From ball 1 Glossop were on the front foot with Lewis Calvert and Steve Marsh setting the tone, attacking the Broadbottom bowling with some exquisite stroke play and strong running between the wickets. A partnership of 49 in quick time gave Glossop the platform they desired to punish Broadbottom. Both openers retired on 25 bringing Alex Carroll to the crease who continued his fine form with the bat and smashed a quick fire 15, backed up by Sam Alder who played well for 9 with 2 superb boundary shots to keep the runs flowing. Tim Halpin was in at 6 and started well helping to take Glossop over the 100 mark in the 13th over. Due to the fantastic start, the Lower middle order could let their hands go and the runs came thick and fast with Tim retiring on 27, Colin Taylor getting 21 and Paul Edgar hitting 25 off just 14 balls. A little cameo from Jay Allen and Steve Kirkham at the end of the innings meant Glossop could post 179, their highest total of the season.

Broadbottom came out to start their chase, but Glossop went on the attack with some attacking fielding positions but needed some strong opening bowling to complement the field placings. Tim Halpin and Rick Ingham opened up and caused all sort of problems, only conceding 9 runs off the opening 4 overs, but it was Rick Ingham again, who made the breakthrough with a superb delivery that was knocked up to short mid-on and taken by Halpin. Ingham really is cementing his spot as Glossop’s opening bowler. Alder, Kirkham, Marsden and Allen bowled the next 8 overs and although wickets were tough to come by, all bowlers caused lots of issues and caused panic in Broadbottoms middle order forcing them to take some risky singles. Glossop’s fielding was sharp, a direct hit from Taylor and some excellent fielding from Steve Kirkham and Lewis Calvert resulted in 3 run outs, the last assisted by Steve Marsh who was deputising behind the stumps, 1 of many good things the Glossop wicket keeper did throughout the game. Broadbottom had been broken and were well behind the run rate, Glossops bowlers were still tight at the end and Alex Carroll finished off his excellent evening with a wicket, caught at mid wicket and Glossop tasted victory again. Broadbottom finished on 85 for 5….a 94 run victory for Glossop Vets.

Man of the Match - Steve Marsh. Superb batting at the top of the order, setting the tone and platform for Glossop to post a large score, and also solid behind the stumps.

This felt like the fixture where Glossop really got hold of the attacking cricket they want to play and if they continue with this positivity and attack mindedness, I'm not sure many teams will be able to cope with them.

Episode 2 - Cozball - The Force Awakens

The threat of rain stayed away and Glossop vets could pull on their whites to entertain the expectant crowds at their first away game. Glossop were happy to welcome back Rick Marsden and Alex Carroll to the team and it was great to see Sam Alder making his debut.

Glossop lost the toss and were put into bat, a position they were not use to but with a strong batting line up they were confident of posting a big score. After a few early wickets Steve Marsh and Rick Marsden settled the ship and both made vital scores of 19, with Marsden setting the tone with some big hitting and Steve Marsh pushing for quick runs. Colin Taylor came in at 6 and knocked a quick fire 25 not out to help settle things in the middle order, well supported by Alex Carroll who made 18. The wicket was slowing up but Lewis Calvert and Sam Alder added some vital runs in the last few overs and Glossop Vets ended up posting a combative score of 116.

After a quick change around Rick Ingham and Lewis Calvert opened the bowling and although no wickets taken, bowling was tight and pressure was building. Steve Marsh came on and made the break through with a good length ball that was chipped up and taken by Colin Taylor at backward square leg, breaking a solid opening partnership. Mottram rallied and made good progress in the middle overs so Glossop were forced to bring on their number 1 strike bowler, and he didn't disappoint. Paul Edgar taking 2 wickets in his first over and slowing Mottram's progress. With the scores looking tight Jay Allen, Rick Marden, Alex Carrroll, Steve Kirkham and Sam Alder all bowled vital 2nd overs to keep Glossop in the game. Pressure built and Mottram were forced to take risky runs, the ball went loose and Glossop's wicket keeper, Andy Wilde snaffled the ball and aimed at the stumps, a direct hit ran out Mottram's danger man. Glossop were getting on top but Mottram only needed 13 runs off the last 2 overs for a big win. Taylor bowled the penultimate over and a wicket on the first ball, caught by Marsden at mid wicket helped increase the pressure on Mottram. Edgar bowled the last over and held his nerve only giving away 6 runs, leading the Vets to to a 6 run victory and helping them remain unbeaten in the season and leading to wild celebrations in the away team dressing room.

Man of the Match: A proper all round team performance where everyone contributed but possibly just taken by Colin Taylor (*) with 25 not out and 2 overs 1 wicket for 3 runs and 1 catch.

Sandiacre Town CC Under 15s clinched a narrow 9-run victory over Glossop CC Under 15s in a thrilling Derbyshire U15 County Cup Final at Glossop Cricket Club. Both teams showcased exceptional talent and spirit in a contest that went down to the wire, offering an exciting conclusion to the competition. Having beaten good teams like New Mills, Dinting, Eckington and Swarkestone along the way Glossop, were hopeful of being competitive against a strong Sandiacre team. Unfortunately for Glossop, Harry Dyson, Lucas Kenyon, and Dan Keeley all missed out on the game with injuries, making the task ahead a little more challenging.

Sandiacre batted first after winning the toss and posted a competitive 108-5 from their 20 overs. With their top 4 all representing the Derbyshire Pathway sides, Glossop knew early wickets would be crucial. After a tight opening spell from Boothroyd, it was Joseph Bolton who made the breakthrough bowling the Dangerous Trueman for 7. However, Sandiacre’s innings was built around a fantastic knock from captain James Jordison, who scored a commanding 42 off 36 balls, hitting five boundaries and leading his team from the front. Jordison’s partnership with Jack Murfin (33 off 45 balls) helped to stabilize the innings. As it looked like Sandiacre may get to an unobtainable total Ben Wilson made a key breakthrough by dismissing the dangerous Jordison, bowling him out at a critical moment and halting Sandiacre’s momentum.

Glossop’s bowlers worked hard throughout, with Max Mulvey taking the other wicket of S Jordison. Some of the fielding efforts were top-notch as well, with run-outs from Joe Doody and Laurence Riley keeping Sandiacre’s total in check.

In reply, Glossop faced an uphill task early on, losing wickets regularly to Sandiacre’s disciplined bowling attack. Archie Gough delivered a standout performance, claiming 3-13 in his 4 overs, while Jack Murfin and Wilf Trueman picked up 2 wickets each. Despite the early struggles, Ben Wilson (14) and Joe Doody (10) attempted to stabilize the innings, but Sandiacre’s bowlers kept the pressure on.

At 79-9, Glossop looked to be on the brink of defeat, but the Allen brothers, Nathan and Lewis, staged a thrilling late fightback. Nathan Allen played fearlessly, smashing 18 off 12 balls, including three boundaries, while Lewis Allen provided solid support. Their partnership brought the game to life, narrowing the margin and bringing Glossop within striking distance of an unlikely win. Their entertaining knock electrified the crowd and made for a tense finish.

Ultimately, Sandiacre’s bowlers held their nerve, with Wilf Trueman taking the final wicket of Nathan Allen, securing the victory as Glossop were bowled out for 99 in 19.4 overs. Despite the loss, Glossop’s fighting spirit, particularly from the Allen brothers and the unwavering support from their teammates, made the final a truly memorable and heartwarming contest.

The match was a fine display of junior cricket, with Sandiacre’s balanced performance earning them the title, but Glossop’s determination and camaraderie left an equally lasting impression. Both teams can be proud of their performances in this close and exciting final.

Finally the rain held off and Glossop vets could pull on the whites again and entertain their patient fans. On an overcast evening and a tricky wicket the Vets were able to give debuts to Phil Hagerty and Steve Kirkham. Phil was thrown in at the deep end, opening the bowling with Rick Ingham. Some great stuff early on lead to the first wicket with Rick building the pressure and causing Mark Norris to send a loopy catch out to mid wicket which Colin Taylor took with a forward diving catch. Wickets were tough to get in the middle overs but some excellent fielding from Jay Allen, Rob Peck, Steve Kirkham and Lewis Calvert helped restrict the runs Charlesworth were accumulating. The pressure was building in the last 4 overs for Charlesworth to post a big score but a wicket for Jay and an edge off Colins bowling with an incredible diving catch down the right hand side by Andy Wilde behind the stumps, capped off a good evening for Glossop's wicketkeeper and Glossop were set 109 to win.

Lewis was promoted up the order to open with Steve Marsh and started well with 13 from 13 balls but on a tough wicket with fading light conditions it was Steve who keep things moving early on. Tim Halpin came in at number 3 and sh owed his destructive power with 2 early boundaries but was unlucky with one that popped up a bit and was caught out. This brought Paul Edgar to the crease who instantly upped the tempo and got some quick singles on the board. Steve and Paul got to work and kept the run rate under control. 4 boundaries later Paul had scored a fabulous 26 from 20 balls and was retired and Steve was out for 19 setting up a nervy last 4 overs but an achievable target. With Colin and Jay at the crease runs were tough to come by but Jay took it upon himself and smashed 2 boundaries in the 19th over to steer Glossop vets to victory and spark wild celebrations in front of the clubhouse.

Tough call for Man of the Match btw Paul Edgar ( 2 overs 4 runs and 26*) and Jay Allen ( 2 overs 7 runs 1 wicket and 18*) but Jay just takes it with 2 great bits of fielding, putting his body on line.

Great overall team performance but will look at working on bowling length and quick singles in the next game. There will be selection headaches as the Vets are expected to welcome back Rick Marsden and Sam but we go marching on.

Membership Update - June 2023

Membership 2023

Firstly, we want to say a big "thank you" to everyone who has signed up for membership in 2023. We're currently at 150 social members, which is a record number, and thanks to the monthly payments and online sign up, we've made it easier than ever for our playing members to sort their memberships.

Despite rising costs in 2023, we decided to keep social membership at £10, as we get back on track from some challenging years. This represents excellent value for money, thanks to the drinks offers for members. For the first time ever, members can also use their discount upstairs as well, thanks to the new till system, which is making things easier for both members and staff.

If you want to sign up, there's still time to do it through the website (click the button below) or at the bar. All memberships run to 31st March 2024 so even though we're well into the cricket season now, there's still plenty of opportunities to use it - especially with more cricket on through the week and at weekend.

Juniors Update - June 2023

Under 9s

The start of the season has been a mixed one weather wise meaning the U9s have only had 3 tournaments so far this season. The format for U9s is each team plays 2 games per evening, 6 v 6 with 3 batting pairs facing 3 overs so it’s a 9 over innings. It’s a softball format. The aim is for the kids to learn the fundamentals of cricket whether that be batting, bowling or fielding. The main aim is to get them enjoying the game, to participate and set them on what will hopefully be something they want to do as a hobby or even profession for years to come.

We started off the season with a tournament at Denton West where we played Denton West B and Denton A. Against Denton we fielded really well against a strong team. Some rustiness showed and we couldn’t match their high score, losing the game by 40 runs which at this level is a lot. Wickets really do win games at this level because you lose 4 runs for every wicket lost. In our second game, Freddie who is already playing hard ball in our U11s really showed up, hitting 40 to set us up for a win. Always nice to beat West at any level.

Our second tournament was at a sunny Saddleworth where we played Micklehurst B and then their A team. We played really we against their B team restricting them to 24 in their 9 overs. We managed to score 46 in our 9 overs so a comfortable win. Some really tidy bowling and excellent catching won us the game! In the second game we came up against a strong side with a couple of their players already playing as high as the U13s. It showed and we couldn’t really score enough to trouble them. 50 played 31. We didn’t look out of our depth but a couple of their players really did make a big difference.

On to Denton playing against Droylsden and then Denton B. We really turned up for these games, showing a lot of the skills we’ve been practicing on a Friday and displaying them in the games. Against Droylsden we bowled well restricting them to 41, taking 3 wickets. Young Aiden really set the tone taking 2 wickets in the very first over. We started off slowly with the bat but that was expected. Izzy was playing her first game but batted solidly. It was great to see Izzy playing, its so important we get girls into cricket and hopefully Izzy is the first of many who start playing. She really enjoyed it which is of course the main thing. After 6 overs we needed 24 runs which is a lot in 3 overs. Sam and Ted batted brilliantly to get us to 51 though meaning they scored 34 as a pair. They won us the game and loved doing so. Against Denton B we bowled first again and it was our best team bowling display of the season so far. We rescripted Denton to 11 off their 9 overs. Some great catching, ground fielding and tight straight bowling really set us up for victory. In our batting innings, Izzy and Ted started off really well getting us to 36 off 3, Fred and Aiden took us to 67 off 6 and then Sam and Ted (batting again due to illness for another player) finished the 9 overs off with us scoring 93. In that 93, Ted scored 51*, yes he batted twice but a phenomenal achievement to score 50 off 6 overs (in c.22 balls). 2 great wins on the night for us!

Its been a really encouraging start to the season. Hopefully the weather will be kind for the rest of the season but especially on Monday 12th June when we host a tournament of 6 teams on North Rd meaning around 42 players & coaches, plus 36-72 parents, a great opportunity to showcase our facilities.

The Glossop Glass & Glazing U9s Player of the Month goes to: Freddie Townsend for his excellent all round displays in all 6 games. Batting Fred gives it a whack, bowling he’s accurate and has pace and his fielding is second to none.

Under 11s

The Under 11s are continuing to develop and grow in confidence using the hard ball in the 2023 season at North Road.

Whilst the first few matches were a tough learning curve, the players have really started using the skills and knowledge gained at Friday Night Training and then apply them into match-day scenarios.

The players are beginning to grow as a team and are understanding more and more about the tactics of the game, which will be useful during the second half of the season’s fixtures as they go into the performance league.

It is especially great to see the young players coming down and supporting the senior teams on Saturday and no-doubt some of them in a few years will be turning out for those senior teams!

Standout performances in the early season must go to Henry Marsh who is averaging 32 with the bat and has been central to the onfield captaincy decisions. In addition to this, young Fred Townend, who is still an U9s player, has put in some brilliant spells of bowling and is fearless when it comes to facing older, quicker bowlers.

Under 13s

The U13s have started the season positively after reaching a cup semi-final, they now sit top of their regional league table, meaning they will likely qualify for the top tier of the performance league in June. Whilst there have been notable contributions, the thing that has stood out more than anything is the togetherness the team has. The facilities at North Road are getting good use with most of the team spending nights in the week and large chunks of the weekend in the nets.

The team boasts League Representative player Olly Boothroyd and 2 Derbyshire County players, Joseph Bolton and Ben Wilson. These lads have contributed heavily with bat and ball in games to date as well as putting in some good performances in the senior teams.

Big credit must go to some of the developing talent at the club though. Firstly, the left hander Max Mulvey, who has only really picked the game back up this season has really shown his intent to improve his game. He’s picked up some wickets with his brisk seam bowling and has his first ever 30 not out vs Denton St Lawrence in the process. All-rounder Lucas Kenyon has produced good performances with ball and bat as well as demonstrating some outstanding fielding skills of late. The Dyson brothers, Harry and Jacob, have also shone. Harry seems to have hit form with the bat recently scoring runs with some classy shots vs Dukinfield and Greenfield and Jacob has been picking up wickets with some regularity as well as developing a very safe pair of hands in the field.

Alfie Peck has started to develop his game from left arm seam to spin with a little help from Glossop spin legend, Damian Eyre. He manged to capture his first wicket as a spinner vs Woodhouses earlier this month. This could be an exciting development for the bowling balance of the team as the swing bowling of Nathan Allen, Harry Townend and Ryan Smith continues to improve and will no doubt see each of the lads picking up important wickets and runs in the performance league rounds in the coming month.

Seniors Update - June 2023

1st X1

Led by new skipper Matthew Sonczak, Glossop CC 1XI have made an excellent start to their GMCL Premier 2 campaign and currently sit in third place.

Six of the first eight league games away from home looked tricky on paper, but the 1XI are as yet unbeaten on the road. They've won four, with two further matches being abandoned due to poor early season weather.

Fixtures at North Road have been rare, with the 1XI winning and losing one each in the league, in addition to a comfortable victory in the first round of the cup.

Brendon Schultz - our new Australian overseas amateur - arrived in the UK on May 11th and has made an instant impact. In four matches so far, Brendon has taken 13 wickets @ 9.85, including 5-32 at Stand on debut, and hit a classy unbeaten half-century in the first round of the cup.

Elsewhere in the 1XI, Chris Gill has enjoyed a brilliant start to the year with the bat, making 244 runs @ 48.80 in eight innings and scoring his second Glossop CC century. Lee Dale and Matt Sonczak have also chipped in with important runs, both in the league and T20 competition.

One of the 1XI's strengths last season was spin bowling, and it's been no different in 2023. Will Hargreaves leads the wicket-taking charts with 20 @ 10.40, while Matt Sonczak has 9 @ 15.44 with an economy of just 2.29.

Dom Perrin has perhaps been the pick of the bowlers so far, taking 15 wickets @ 11.07 as a leg-spinner in early April and May, including two brilliant five-wicket hauls against Walshaw and Astley & Tyldesley.

2nd XI

After a successful 2022 season of introducing some of our promising juniors into 2nd team cricket and a 3rd place finish, it was decided early this year that the club needed to continue on its journey of transitioning players from junior to senior cricket. Many of the senior players are in their 40s with fitness, aches, pains, work and family commitments to contend with so the club has realigned its expectations for the year with a clear goal of maintaining its divisional status.

Despite losses versus Moorside and Dukinfield and rain affected match against Shaw, there was early promise shown. Over the 3 games, 13-year-old Derbyshire CCC representative Ben Wilson bowled 21 overs of off spin, picking up 8 wickets for 112 runs. Greater Manchester Cricket League representative Olly Boothroyd debuted, bowling his promising seam and showing some flare with the bat.

The team picked up its first win versus Saddleworth at a bustling North Road. Jonny Booth hit his straps and got 5 for 24 off 11 overs with stalwarts Mark Usher and Steve Bates both bowling miserly spells and picking up 1 and 2 wickets respectively. It was a landmark for the u13 player Olly Boothroyd too as one of his deliveries took a snick through to Steve Wood and he celebrated his first senior wicket. Saddleworth were all out for 89 which looked like an easy target to chase. However, after a solid start, wickets fell in quick succession and again the youngsters had a chance to shine. Another Derbyshire CCC junior, Joseph Bolton, batted fearlessly against a good bowling attack with a mixture of careful shots and some aggressive blows. When the classy left hander fell just over halfway to target the game was in the balance. Two partnerships became crucial with Steve Wood (16) and Ben Wilson putting on 18 together. When Woody fell, Sam Elliott (14*) came to the crease and both him and Wilson (13*) batted beautifully to see the game home in style, much to the plaudits of packed crowd.

Werneth and Prestwich proved to be challenging games however notable performances from seniors Usher, Sam Dyson and Dave Allen with some great signs of batting promise from junior Jack Stopford too. Olly Boothroyd picked up his 2nd senior wicket at Werneth and proved his talent with the bat scoring a fluent 19* off 24 balls.

The final game of May came at North Road with Woodhouses making the short trip from Failsworth. Their first innings total of 185 for 4 looked like it could be a challenging task. However, with a return to the side for David Wilde, Dan Eyre and first teamer Adam Hayes in at 3 Glossop fancied its chances…if only they could get a start…The left hander Wilde looked class, stroking the ball all around the wicket whilst at the other end, Eyre dominated the Woodhouses attack. Their opening partnership of 129 was a joy to watch and had the crowd elated. Eyres innings included 11 fours and 2 sixes when he was eventually out for 59 ball 75. Wildes 66* came off 85 balls and included 12 fours and Adam Hayes scored a run a ball 34* which saw Glossop home with 16 overs to spare.

3rd X1 and Vets.

The clubs newly formed 3rd X1 and Vets team have played one game each to date.

The 3rd team, playing with 8 juniors, managed a penultimate ball win against a Stalybridge side.

Match report below

Top start from the 3rd X1 yesterday. Excellent effort in the field with Olly, Nathan, Mike Boothroyd, Jacob, Alfie and Ben picking up wickets. Everyone deserves a mention with the ball but Nathan and Max deserve singling out as their spells were particularly miserly.

Also special mention to the 'vets' Steve for an excellent diving (forward) catch off the ever improving bowling of Jacob Dyson but then, not to be outdone by his aging teammate, Jason Allen pulled out an outstanding catch diving to his right to snaffle a beauty off the seam bowling of Alfie , removing dangerman Tolley (62) in the process.

Both crowd and teammates went wild for both catches and rightly so! (I share Paul Edgars view, Jason's catch was the better though, just!).

All in all, it was a really good half in the field, even when the ball was flying around for boundaries later on, we seemed to keep our cool and remained disciplined. Really happy with our progress here.

2nd innings started really well with Jack Stopford and Steve Marsh (42) opening up putting on 60 for the first wicket. Steve played well and punished the bad ball. Jack was patient and correct and managed to rotate the strike well when possible against a good bowling attack. When Steve fell to an excellent caught and bowled up stepped Olly Boothroyd and he picked up where Steve had left off punishing the bad balls particularly anything down legside. Jack showed great bravery after being peppered in the mid-riff from a few of the faster bowlers, but having weathered the storm incredibly well he eventually fell to the spin bowling of Tolley for a solid and very encouraging opening knock of 15.

Ben joined Olly and the pair of them rotated the strike well with both playing some nice shots. Olly rode his luck but was destructive in the process and started to edge close to his maiden 50..... As Ben (18) looked to push on he was caught with a beauty of one handed catch just as the game was looking like it was going to get wrapped by the pair. Max came in at 5 and although played some nice shots he was unfortunately bowled trying to push the score on. Like most of the lads he's progressing at a really good rate and the difference in his technique in 4 weeks is huge.

Next out was debutant Mike Boothroyd with son Olly on 49 and with us only needing 10 more runs. Mike's looked good value for runs in the practice sessions but this is match day......would/could the pressure show? Could this fine golfer who knows pressures and competition at a high level guide his cricket side to victory alongside his son? Well, if he was feeling the pressure it didn't show. He was calm, pushing a few deliveries back off the pick of the Stalybridge bowlers, even picking up a few singles in the process. Olly though, in true belligerent style smashed his way to his half century and released the pressure on the game. With only 3 balls remaining of the game and Mike facing, Olly saw a ball go down leg and decide to run through for a single bye to win the game much to the adulation of the spectators. Son and Father walking off the pitch together was a very special moment.

Glossop CC Vets vs Hare and Hounds

The vets games vs Hare and Hounds was the clubs first ever midweek social game. A mixture of parents, friends of parents and a GCC player took the field against a much fancied Hare and Hounds team.

The Hare raced to a great start with Chris Coll, Chris Sonczak, Rose and Brammer all reaching their retirement with relative ease helping H&H put on a large score of 143 in their allotted 20 overs.

Despite losing Marsden (6), Marsh (24) and Tinsley (20) kept the run rate ticking over. A few more wickets were lost but Halpin (24), Taylor (22) and Carroll (10) helped get the team back in with a chance of winning. Eventually it was up to Ingham (2*) and Edgar (10*) to see the game home with a ball to spare. A nervy finish to day the least but a great effort for the Vets first outing. Just a shame to see all the pulled hamstrings, groin strains and headaches after the game.

2023 April Review

After a tricky few years for the club, we are delighted with the way things have started in 2023.

Firstly, winning back the support and trust of the local community off the field was vital for us at the start of this year, and we're truly grateful for the way we've been supported over the first few weeks of both the cricket and bowling seasons.

It's been great to see the bar full so often throughout the week - not just on matchdays - with members, supporters and players alike all able to watch live sport while enjoying cheaper drinks and hot food. The committee worked hard over the off-season to modernise the club's social scene, and it's fantastic to see this come to fruition with our brand new TVs, Sky Sports & BT Sport subscriptions, comfy sofas and darts board.

As you're probably aware by now, we appointed a club steward at the end of March to help with the day-to-day running of the club. Vicky, supported by her partner David, has been a revelation for our club during the first month or so of her tenure, creating a friendly, welcoming environment and going above and beyond to make sure everyone is happy, both in the downstairs members bar and with upstairs functions. We're really excited to see what the future holds with them both at the helm.

Membership:

Membership has been really well supported so far in 2023. Senior and junior players alike have had access to subsidised kit from the club for paying their annual subs, while a £10 social membership qualifies members for cheaper drinks, including £3.90 for pints of Guinness and Madri. At that price, it's hard to find anywhere better in the local area, and when you factor in the opportunity to drink in the biggest beer garden in Glossop in the sun, it's a no-brainer!

On the field:

The 1XI enjoyed a great start to their season, picking up wins at Moorside and Walshaw, while further away fixtures against Flixton and Heywood were abandoned due to the weather. 15 points from four consecutive away games in April was a brilliant outcome.

For our 2XI, we've had a slight change of focus this year with a view to developing our junior players. A challenging start saw them lose their opening game to Moorside, and they were unfortunate to be rained off against Shaw, having been in a strong position before the poor weather arrived. However, despite the results it's been great to see some of our younger junior members getting stuck in and contributing in senior teams every match - long may it continue!

It was also a particularly busy month for the junior section - expertly co-ordinated by Dave Allen - with the U13s, U11s and U9s all putting in some great performances and doing the club proud in their first few games.

We're also pleased to confirm that North Road will be hosting representative games for both Derbyshire and Lancashire at various points throughout the season. Stay tuned for more information on this.

Junior Training:

Despite some inclement weather, Friday Night Training has started really positively, with current players getting back involved with coaching for the first time in several years. Over 80 children were present last Friday as we began our All Stars Cricket campaign at North Road, alongside our regular U9, U11 and U13 training sessions.

Around the ground:

As always, work has been going on around the ground to maintain North Road's standards. We've been able to purchase brand new sheets for the covers and sightscreens, had a web camera fitted for live streaming fixtures on YouTube, and the scorebox has been modernised and fitted with windows, courtesy of our friends at Charlestown Electrical and Glossop Glass & Glazing respectively.

After a brief delay, our flashy new kit is also due to arrive from Icon Sports this week, bearing fresh sponsor logos for the next three seasons. As always, we are eternally grateful for the support of all of our sponsors and look forward to hosting them for an afternoon or two later in the season.
