The Challenge Overview

This is one of the most rewarding single-day mountain challenges in England, crossing:

  1. Peak Height (metres) Height (feet)
    Red Pike (Buttermere) 755 m 2,477 ft
    High Stile 807 m 2,648 ft
    High Crag 744 m 2,441 ft
    Seat (Buttermere) 561 m 1,841 ft
    Haystacks 597 m 1,959 ft
    Dale Head 753 m 2,470 ft
    Hindscarth 727 m 2,385 ft
    Robinson 737 m 2,418 ft
    High Snockrigg 369 m 1,211 ft
    Fleetwith Pike 648 m 2,126 ft

🥾 Minimum fitness level required (realistic expectation)

Participants should ideally be able to:

  • Walk 15–20 km comfortably
  • Climb 1,000 m+ of ascent in a day
  • Spend 10-12 hours on their feet
  • Walk confidently on rocky, uneven terrain
  • Keep moving steadily for long periods with short breaks

This is not a beginner walk, but it is achievable for reasonably active club members with focussed preparation.

⛰️ What makes this challenge tougher than it sounds

  • Over 2,000 metres of ascent across the route — significantly more climbing than many well-known charity challenges such as the Yorkshire Three Peaks
  • Sustained ridge walking throughout the day, with very few flat recovery sections between summits
  • Several sustained steep climbs throughout the route, particularly across the High Stile ridge and the final ascent of Fleetwith Pike, which can be demanding after a full day in the hills
  • Rocky and uneven Lakeland mountain terrain, including loose stone, stepped paths, and rough ground that slows walking pace compared with lowland routes
  • A long and committing High Stile ridge section(Red Pike → High Stile → High Crag) with limited quick exit options if conditions change
  • Navigation becomes more challenging in poor visibility, as mist can arrive quickly and some ridge junctions are not obvious without map skills
  • Four summits remain late in the day(Dale Head, Hindscarth, Robinson and High Snockrigg), making the final stages physically and mentally demanding
  • Extended time spent above 700–800 metres elevation, where weather conditions can be colder, windier and more exposed than in the valley
  • Limited road access and facilities along much of the route, meaning this is a true mountain challenge rather than a valley-based walk
  • ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----

By paying the £35 per person fee (for 2 experienced guides on the day) you confirm and agree to the following:

I confirm that I am signing up to take part in the Glossop Cricket Club Lake District 10 Peaks Challenge on Saturday 19th September. I agree to aim to raise a minimum of £250 in sponsorship in support of The Christie Charity and grassroots cricket at Glossop Cricket Club. I understand that I am responsible for arranging my own accommodation if required, contributing £35 towards the cost of mountain guides, and ensuring that I am suitably fit and prepared for a full day of mountain walking. I also acknowledge that participation is at my own risk and that I will follow guidance provided by the event organisers and qualified leaders.
